PD: Man just released from prison charged with rape near ASU

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Three days after Lane Halona, 23, was released from federal prison, police said he beat and raped a woman walking home from work near Mill Avenue in Tempe.

The attack happened around 4:30 Sunday morning in the area of 1st Street and Farmer Avenue.

"She was on her way home from work. She was walking by herself. This violent individual came up behind her, struck her in the head with a huge amount of force and knocked her to the ground," Tempe Police Sgt. Michael Pooley said.

Detectives said the attack was random.

"He grabbed her and dragged her into an alley into some bushes and continued to beat her," Pooley said.

Investigators said the woman was covered with cuts and gashes. She dragged herself out of the alley after the attack and made it home to her fiance. The couple called police and then headed back to the crime scene.

"Both the victim and her fiance were there. They had located the suspect, who was passed out sleeping in the bushes," said Pooley.

Officers said they found him curled up on the ground, wrapped up in the woman's jacket.

Halona is charged with two counts of sexual assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping. He had previously been in prison serving a 23-month sentence for aggravated assault and DUI.
