FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) -

Black Onyx won the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday to advance to the Kentucky Derby.

Ridden by Joe Bravo, the 16-1 long-shot surged from eighth at the start of the race to win the Spiral Stakes. This marks Black Onyx's third victory in five career starts.

The horse's owner, Sam Herzberg, took home a $550 thousand prize and advances to the Kentucky Derby.

"You have to have a lot of luck to win these races, you know, not just being the best horse," said Herzberg. "Everything went just perfect today. God bless the man up there and I hope we do okay in the Derby."

The 139th Kentucky Derby will be held on May 4 at Churchill Downs.
