Police say Auburn sexual assault report was fake

Posted: Updated:

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Auburn Police say after an extensive investigation, it has been determined that the report of a sexual assault on the Auburn University Campus was fake.

Police say there was no incident in the area of West Samford Avenue near Lem Morrison Drive, or anywhere else on campus. At no point was the individual who filed the report, students, or any other citizen in danger.

A 20-year-old female previously reported on Tuesday, March 19 that she was jogging on West Samford Avenue near Lem Morrison Drive when someone grabbed her from behind, took her near the wood line, and sexually assaulted her.

The alleged victim, who was not an Auburn University student, told police that the suspect described as a college-aged muscular white male who has a beard or facial hair, fled the area on foot after the attack. Officers immediately saturated the area and an extensive search was conducted. The victim, who was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment, added that the suspect would have scratches on his face because she fought back during the attack.

Police say this case is now closed. Authorities also say there will be no charges against the woman who filed a false report.
