Authorities in Crenshaw County are investigating the circumstances surrounding a homicide that occurred Monday.

The Crenshaw County District Attorney's office says an 88-year-old man was found dead in his home on County Road 17 in Sardis. That's approximately 4 miles south of Highland Home.  Authorities said the man's son went to have lunch with him, and discovered his father dead.

"I just barely went inside the door, there was a good bit of blood," said Charlotte Tesmer, District Attorney for Butler, Crenshaw and Lowndes Counties. "And the house has been torn apart as though someone had been looking for something."

Tesmer said it appeared some items had been taken, but could not confirm what those were. She said the man had last been seen on Saturday morning.

Relatives of the man declined to speak on camera, but said their loved one kept to himself, and can't imagine why someone would commit such an act toward him.

The District Attorney's office says there are no suspects at this time and a motive is not currently known.

Details, including the victim's identification, have not yet been confirmed.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was also on scene.
