PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Several snakes were saved when a Phoenix home went up in flames Tuesday afternoon, firefighters said.

Thick smoke was billowing in the air as fire units arrived at the home in the 4700 block of West Kimberly Way at 2:30 p.m.

Fire authorities said everyone got out of the burning home safely.

Fire crews were also able to retrieve many personal belongings and save the lower floors from destruction.

Firefighters said they found a fire outside the home and it quickly spread to the second floor and attic space of the structure.

Investigators pinned the fire on the homeowner, who they said had been using a grinder tool to cut car parts. A large vine on the side of the home caught fire and the blaze expanded from there.
