MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says there are good reasons why the Tigers are the last Southeastern Conference team to start spring practice.

He says the players needed the extra time to get stronger and come into Wednesday's opening practice mentally tougher.

Malzahn said Tuesday the Tigers have "got to get our edge back." With that in mind, he says Auburn will have plenty of hitting this spring.

He says the players must leave spring with a grasp of the Tigers' new uptempo offense and a defense switching to four linemen, two linebackers and five defensive backs.

He said every position on the depth chart is up for grabs. That certainly includes quarterback, where Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace are the only scholarship players until three signees join them this summer.
