New movie theater to be built in Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

A new movie theatre is on the horizon for the city of Opelika.

City leaders say after years of trying and several projects that were started then stopped, it looks like construction on a new state-of-the-art Carmike Cinemas will begin in April.

Building plans for a Carmike Cinemas 16 are in the process of being approved by the state building commission.

The new theater will be located near Tiger Town, next door to the Holiday Inn Express on Gateway Drive.

"We are thrilled to death about a new movie theater we have wanted one for such a long, long time and for it to be located near our  hotels, people can just walk over and go to the movies and so can our residents it is just a good business decision all he way around for the city of Opelika," said Barbara Patton, president of the Opelika Chamber of Commerce.

The plans include 3D and an 80 foot tall screen. If plans are approved by the state, they will go to the City Planning Commission for the bidding process.

The hope is to finish construction by November of this year.
