Slain ex-husband's insurance company files complaint against wife

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An insurance company has filed a complaint in federal court to not pay a high dollar life insurance policy to a Huntsville woman after her ex-husband was killed.

Huntsville police have not solved Alonzo McGhee's murder. He was fatally shot in January outside his home.

The insurance company claims Fillis McGhee has not been cleared by HPD in her ex-husband's murder so they don't want to pay her.

Primerica Life Insurance company out of Massachusetts said the claim is for more than $430,000.

Alonzo McGhee divorced his wife Fillis in late December. Less than ten days later he was shot multiple times in front of his home. HPD is still investigating the homicide.

Court documents show Fillis McGhee filed to cash in the life insurance policy about two weeks after the murder and less than a month after their divorce was finalized. Fillis' name was still listed as a beneficiary.

WAFF 48 News tried to contact Fillis McGhee, but her number listed in the phone book has been disconnected.

Since her husband's death, Fillis has started to work as the Child Development Center Director at Progressive Union Baptist Church in Huntsville.  It's the church she attended with her husband.

Pastor Wayne Snodgrass said she's adjusting to her new role.

"I observe her from time to time, and it's probably not much different than any other person who has had a relationship for quite some time," he said.

Snodgrass said he hoped that police would have some answers in the case by now, but in the meantime he prays whoever is responsible for killing his friend will be brought to justice.

"I just believe in the possibility that whoever committed this, there will be some degree of penalty for what they've done because I know that in the divine order of things it will come out," he said.
