MONTGOMERY, OH (FOX19) -

Walk the hallways of Moeller High School, and you'll see plenty of scruffy-faced students.

The school has always maintained a strict policy against facial hair, but this month, students are participating in a fundraiser to help one of their own.

Danny O'Keefe, a Moeller alum from 2002, was seriously injured in May of 2011 while protecting his sister from an attack by her ex-boyfriend. O'Keefe received 37 stab wounds to the head, suffering a serious brain injury.

Those close to O'Keefe say he is recuperating slowly, but is undergoing intensive speech, occupational and physical therapy at the University of Michigan, totaling $30,000 per month.

As a result, the first-ever 'Beards for our Brother' contest was held at Moeller. The contest is part of a month-long campaign called 'March for Danny', raising awareness of aphasia and funds for his continued treatment.

On Thursday, O'Keefe and his father were on hand to judge the contest.

'March for Danny' has raised more than $4,700 for his family.
