PHOENIX (CBS5) -

U.S. Marshals have arrested a man wanted in a New Mexico murder who was hiding out at his girlfriend's Phoenix apartment, according to authorities.

U.S. Marshals District of Arizona spokeswoman Amelia Swenhaugen said Johnny Juan Barela, 48, was taken into custody near 28th Drive and Cactus on Thursday afternoon after a statewide manhunt in New Mexico.

Barela was wanted in connection with the brutal murder of 45-year-old Gregory Alonzo of Roswell, NM, who police say was stabbed to death March 18.

Authorities say Barela was arrested without incident and is in the Maricopa County Jail awaiting extradition back to New Mexico.
