A spokeswoman at Kroger's headquarters here says she can't reveal whether reports of increased security in baby aisles will hit stores in the Tri-State area.

The supermarket chain has added a security camera and video monitor in the baby formula aisle at a Hermitage, Tennessee, store. Baby formula isn't the most expensive item at Kroger. But it's non-perishable and easy for thieves to re-sell. The monitor is visible to customers to emphasize that they're being watched.

As for stores in the Tri-State, Kroger spokeswoman Rachael Betzler could only say security cameras are "strategically placed."

But in Tennessee, Kroger spokeswoman Melissa Eads clearly wants customers in her area to know that they're not likely to get away with stealing formula.

"When you're coming down one of these aisles you're going to see yourself and you're going to know, ‘Uh-oh, this aisle is definitely being monitored.' So we're hoping that will cause somebody to think twice before they make the decision to steal," Eads said.

There's another high-priced item that thieves seem to want to steal from Kroger lately: laundry detergent.
