MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

As the tax deadline looms, the IRS is making clear one message--protect yourself against the Dirty Dozen. That's 12 tax scams officials say are often employed at this time of year.

Things like identity theft, fake emails asking for sensitive information, and false tax preparers preying on you.  It's one reason free programs like AARP Tax Aid are available.

"It helps a lot when you're retired," says Willie Joe Colvin.

"We started February the 4th and on that day we did 77 [filings]. That's the most we've ever done in one day."

Rick Courson heads up the initiative at the Montgomery Crump Senior Center.

"We try to serve everybody. We don't like to turn anybody away," says Courson.

The program grows in popularity each year. The deadline isn't even here yet and volunteers say they've processed more returns this year than they did last year. That means all hands are on deck for the next couple weeks.

"We're able to run longer hours and more days a week," says Courson.

"Get it out of the way, get the rebate back," says Marlon and Raymond Gratz.

They already filed their taxes...on purpose.

"Last minute rush. We don't want that rush," says Marlon. 

Neither does Willie Joe Colvin.

"I come here. I don't have any problem. They fill out, they do a good job for me every year."
