Car stolen from gym lot used in smash-and-grab robbery

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police say one crime committed at a Nashville gym led right to another. Investigators believe a couple stole car keys from customers' lockers then drove one of the cars into the side of a building.

The people who stole the car were apparently trying to break into the building, and now police are on the hunt for whoever committed the crime.

More than 1,000 people work out at Planet Fitness on Nolensville Pike almost every day, but these two came for something different.

The suspects walked in March 12 between 8:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. and started scoping out lockers in both the men's and women's locker room.

They stole two sets of car keys from two different unlocked lockers and left everything else inside.

One of the victims, when she realized her keys were missing, immediately called her boyfriend and had her car towed home.

The other victim did what most of us would do. She checked on her car then went back inside to retrace her steps.

By the time she came back out to check on her car for a second time, it was too late.

The car turned up Monday at a Verizon Store in the Nippers Corner area, where police say the duo slammed into the building then attempted to rob it.

Police are now working with the gym owner to figure out who was there at the time of the original crime.

In the meantime, they're asking future gym-goers when they use a locker to actually lock them. Police also suggest you bring your own lock, so you won't fall victim to a crime.

Officers say they have surveillance video of the suspects, but it isn't great.

The man is seen wearing white pants and a dark jacket with a large Tennessee Titans emblem on the back. The woman is wearing a red shirt and green pants, possibly sweat pants or medical scrubs.

If you know anything that will help police crack the case, call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
