Guns, drugs found in curfew sweep of juveniles on probation

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

In a Thursday night curfew sweep of juveniles on probation, Metro officials said the discovery of guns and drugs could lead to harsh consequences.

"This kind of activity among kids under probation hinders their rehabilitation," said Davidson County Juvenile Court Judge Sophia Crawford. "Probation is a privilege, not a right."

Crawford requested the sweep. In it, probation officers and police set out in South Nashville to do 65 checks of juveniles on court-ordered curfew.

"Out of the 65 juveniles checked, 47 were in full compliance," said Crawford.

Of the 18 juveniles not under compliance, Crawford said 15 were just out past their curfew. The other three are of far bigger concern.

"We found drugs, we found guns," said Crawford. "We had a total of four weapons that were confiscated which could've been four saved lives in Nashville last night."

In a full tally, two handguns, one shotgun, one knife, 18 grams of marijuana, 17 hydrocodone pills, and 64 Xanax pills were taken in the sweep.

"Our hope when they're on probation is that they'll follow the terms of probation and be released," said Crawford. "When we go and find drugs and find guns, that's a hindrance to their rehab process. We have to find other mechanisms to handle those cases."

Crawford said in those cases, violations of probation will be filed with the juvenile going in front of a judicial officer to determine if probation is no longer an option.
