KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Grief counselors were at a KCK middle school Monday to comfort students after a 14-year-old was killed over the weekend in a drive-by shooting.

The shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Ann Street.

Investigators believe Miguel Garcia was walking with a 15-year-old boy when a black Ford Explorer pulled up next to them with two men inside.

Police say they had a short argument. The SUV pulled off, circled the block and came back with the men shooting at the teens.

Garcia was hit and crawled to a neighbor's house but later died at the hospital. A resident who lives in the home took him in her arms and desperately tried to help him.

Police are reviewing surveillance video including from a nearby stadium to help them solve this case.

His devastated family remembered on Monday a teen boy who loved cars, building things, but most of all - his mother.

"He was always there for my mom so nothing happened to her," Patricia Garcia said, adding her brother never liked being alone. "All my mom wants is for him to be OK where he is."

One neighbor who did not want to be identified said she heard gunshots and looked outside and saw the struggling teen.

"That's when he came over here saying ‘help me, help me I got shot.' He had blood over him and he collapsed right here in my arms and we helped him inside," she said.

Garcia was an eighth grader at Central Middle School. The other teen that was walking with Garcia was not injured.

A friend posted on Facebook that Garcia loved his family, especially his mom, and before he couldn't breathe, his last words were, "Call my mom."

"A 14-year-old kid had barely started his life. That's where we get really scared for our own children's safety. For a lot of young kids around here walk around here, just minding their own business," neighbor Tina Gerber said.

His devastated mother, who doesn't speak English, isn't angry.

"She doesn't know who did it. They can hide from men's law but not God's law," Cristina Barbosa's son said in interpreting her words from Spanish to English. "He's with the Lord. She says she's thankful for him letting her have her child as long as he did."

The family moved to KCK just a few weeks ago. Miguel spent most of his younger years in Olathe and Overland Park.

Police are searching for two Hispanic males. Investigators have not released any additional suspect description.
