Prattville to add fire, police annex next door to Target store

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

A building next door to Target in Prattville has suddenly become a place of strategic importance for the city. Target has worked out a deal with two city departments to turn the section into an annex.

The news is huge for Sgt. Mike Vineyard. "We can come here now and write our reports," Vineyard, a motorcycle officer with the police department, explained.

Vineyard often has to park his police motorcycle and file his reports. Not anymore.

This is part of a nationwide program by Target to develop a closer relationship with city and fire departments. "We had this building and we thought it would a great way to utilize it since we already work well with them," Target spokeswoman Amanda Smith explained.

Mayor Bill Gillespie says no taxpayers dollars were spent to make it happen. "The only thing we agreed to do is provide the incidentals such as phone hook-ups and computers," Gillespie said.

The new arrangement with Target affects Prattvillians. The police department, for example, says now that it has this annex in east Prattville there is no question it will reduce the response time on emergency calls.

"This should slice off our time by half to the majority of our accidents," said Vineyard.

Inside, police and fire personnel will have their own separate offices, though they will share common areas throughout the building.

City leaders says once everything is on-line the annex should be up and running within one week.
