STATESBORO, GA -

Sometimes the best man for the job is the man that's been trying to beat you for years. The Georgia Southern basketball program has named former College of Charleston assistant Mark Byington as its new head coach.

Byington spent last season as an assistant at Virginia Tech but spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at the Eagles' Southern Conference rival College of Charleston.

He was named interim head coach of the Cougars for the final month of the 2011-12 season after Bobby Cremins took a leave of absence and guided the Cougars to a 7-4 record in their last 11 ball games.

"Mark has the energy, the knowledge, the experience and the work ethic to elevate our men's basketball program to where we want it to be, which is competing for conference championships," said Georgia Southern athletics director Tom Kleinlein. "He rose to the top of a pool of a quality group of candidates as we conducted an exhaustive national search. What we found throughout the process is that Mark is the best fit for Georgia Southern University."

Byington played his college ball at UNC Wilmington and replaces Charlton Young who went 14-19 last season with the Eagles.
