PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill requiring schools to notify parents before using isolation rooms for misbehaving students.
CBS 5 News was first to break the story more than a year ago about Arizona schools using rooms the size of small closets, commonly referred to as "scream rooms," in which unruly children are placed.
It's something most parents didn't even know was happening, a lapse in communication bridged with Brewer's signature.
Brewer signed House Bill 2476 into law on Wednesday. It requires schools to notify parents and get consent before putting their child in an isolation room.
"I view this measure as a starting point as the state reviews the practice of these isolation rooms and any necessary steps we can take to ensure they are not misused," Brewer said.
The bill was sponsored by freshman Rep. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa.
It's the first bill of its kind. Townsend said the next step would be to regulate the room's size and the length of time a child can be in one.
"It deserves our close attention to make sure we're doing it correctly," Townsend told CBS 5 News when the bill was first introduced.
