Representative Martha Roby is reviving an effort in Washington to give more flexibility to hourly workers, by sponsoring the Working Families Flexibility Act of 2013.

"It allows the employee in a voluntary written agreement with the employer to say I would like to use some of my overtime for comp time," Rep. Roby said.

Roby visited the CPA firm Diamond, Carmichael, Gary, Patterson & Duke in Montgomery to discuss the proposed law.  Workers there rack up a lot of overtime and employee Karen Deloach said she would welcome the flexibility.

"Every summer I like to go on a mission trip to Nicaragua with my church," she said.  "When I take that time off, I'd like to be able to work ahead and work when I get back to make up that time and not have it affect my pay in any way."

Federal law allows public sector workers to convert overtime into comp time, but prohibits hourly workers in the private sector from taking the option.

The bill has been brought up in Congress before but hasn't moved.  Roby said the bill will have a hearing next week, and could come up from a vote this year.
