Victim identified in Montgomery's 18th homicide of 2013

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery Police now know the identity of the woman shot and killed on Monday at a home off of Lower Wetumpka Road.

Police say her identity was unknown until Wednesday afternoon - two days after her death. She has now been identified as 20-year-old Ashley Cheatham of Montgomery.

Authorities say police and fire medics were called to a home in the 3700 block of Lower Wetumpka Road around 7 a.m. Monday on the call of subject down. When they arrived they located the victim on the steps of the home. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The owner of the home where Cheatham was found spoke to WSFA 12 News on Monday and said he heard fighting at the residence the night before as well as gunshots - that's why he called police. He said he never went outside to see what happened - he was afraid for his own life.

The next morning, a neighbor walking by the home saw Cheatham's body on the porch - that's when police were called the second time, this time on the report of a subject down.

MPD says the investigation into this case is continuing - no arrests have been made at this time.

Police ask individuals with knowledge of this homicide to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP, Secret Witness at 262-4000, or the Montgomery Police Department at 625-2831.

Cheatham's death is considered Montgomery's 18th homicide of 2013.
