BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A woman is in jail after Beaufort County deputies say they found 40 animals, including 36 guinea pigs, and four children living in unsanitary conditions while under her supervision.

Jessica McManigle was arrested Monday on four counts of cruelty to children and three counts of cruelty to animals.

Robin McIntosh with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says four children were taken into emergency protective custody by the Department of Social Services after they were found living in a minivan in front of a home for an extended period of time.

According to McIntosh, deputies also found two dogs, two rabbits, and 36 guinea pigs living in unsanitary conditions in the backyard of the home. The animals were seized by Animal Control and taken to Pet Helpers.

The investigation is ongoing.
