Mom in court after accused of trying to drown her 2 daughters

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman announced he has filed two attempted first-degree murder charges against a 23-year-old woman.

Johnna Green is accused of attempting to drown her daughters earlier this week. Bond has been set at $1 million.

Green was in court Friday morning on a custody hearing. She is slated to make her first court appearance on the criminal charges Friday afternoon.

One child, known as J.T., is 1 years old. The second child, J.G., is 4 years old.

Gorman said a court has placed her two children, who remain in critical condition at an area hospital, in the custody of Kansas social services. A closed door hearing was held on the status of the children's custody Friday morning.

Because it involved juveniles, no details will be released by authorities about the outcome of the hearing. The father of the youngest child was present in the courtroom. Green was present via a video feed.

The two children remain in the intensive care unit at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Green apparently called 911 Tuesday about 6 p.m. Gorman said she held the younger child underwater.

The horrifying discovery occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 2900 block of South 52nd Street.

The father of the youngest child is cooperating with investigators. He wasn't at the home at the time. A neighbor called and delivered the bad news to him.

Although he was only the father of the youngest child, those who know the man said he treated both as though they were his own kids. He has remained by their sides at the hospital since he was told the news.

The father wrote about the girls on his Facebook page.

"UI got 2 daughters. They r my life and soul I love them very much and my life (was) just turned up side down and now (I'm) very lost and don't know what to do I'm just glad I have my girls and family. I try very hard to take care of them the best I can and give them everything in the world."

He added a personal comment to Green.

"And Johnna Marie," he wrote. "I love u very much and always will."

The father declined comment after Friday's hearing.

Gorman and KCK Police Chief Rick Armstrong said this case is especially tough because it involves children.

"Many of you have kids of your own. I've raised three kids and have a grandson now. It's hard to see that and you wonder why things happen like they do," Gorman said.

They emphasized that resources are available to anyone battling depression, including new mothers.

"Our message is there are mechanisms to protect children in our community. Whether anyone is distraught or overwhelmed with their ability to handle children, there are mechanisms," Armstrong said, adding police will help put mothers in touch with connections that ensure the safety of their children and get them the help they need.
