COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has charged a Columbia Police officer with DUI after troopers say he was found asleep behind the wheel while stopped at a traffic light.

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Columbia Police officers came upon a vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light on Garners Ferry Road near Leesburg Road. Officers found the driver asleep behind the wheel.

Highway Patrol officers were called to the scene, and troopers eventually got the driver out of the vehicle. They identified the driver as 34-year-old Michael Watson, who is a Columbia Police officer. Watson was driving his personal vehicle.

Watson was charged with DUI.

Columbia Police say he is suspended without pay pending the Highway Patrol's investigation.
