Gov. Bentley to sign HB 57 abortion bill Tuesday

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley's office confirmed Monday the date that he will sign into law House Bill 57,  legislation that will tighten restrictions on abortion clinics around the state.

Known officially as the Women's Health and Safety Act, HB 57 will become law after the governor signs it Tuesday.

Governor Bentley will be joined at Tuesday's signing by Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey, House Speaker Mike Hubbard, Representative Mary Sue McClurkin, Senator Scott Beason and several others.

The bill requires abortion clinics to use doctors who have approval to admit patients to hospitals in the same city. It also sets stricter building requirements, including wider halls and better fire suppression systems.

Proponents say the legislation will make abortions safer. Opponents contend it's aimed at straining clinics with unneeded standards and is intended to end abortions in the state.
