Editorial: "Biscuits a home run for downtown"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The words "play ball" first rang out in Riverwalk Stadium in the spring of 2004 celebrating the first pitch and season of our beloved Montgomery Biscuits.  Hard to believe that was 9 years ago as the team embarked on its 10th season last week.

Current Montgomery City Council President, Charles Jinright and former Mayor, Bobby Bright should take great pride in their efforts to spearhead and finalize the deal that ultimately brought this minor league to Montgomery.

It's our opinion, that the Biscuits were and are a driving force in the resurgence of Montgomery's downtown.  Look around at all the new restaurants, bars, lofts and businesses that were not around prior to the Biscuits. With close to a quarter million baseball fans attending games in 2012 alone it's hard to argue the Montgomery Biscuits aren't doing their part to invigorating downtown.

So we hope you will all enjoy a meal or drink a downtown restaurant or bar, invite friends to come to town and spend the night in one of our hotels and take in some games this season.  It's great family fun and it's great for Montgomery.
