Kentucky Derby Museum commemorates Secretariat

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - There have been two-time Triple Crown champions and other close calls, but no horse quite like Big Red.

There's currently a showcase about the greatest athlete in thoroughbred racing: Secretariat. The new exhibit is on display giving Kentucky Derby Museum visitors a glimpse into the 1973 Triple Crown sweep.

Forty years later, the museum has opened an exhibit marking four decades since the historic Derby win.

Walt Disney Pictures captured the historic horse in a 2010 film. Currently, rare artifacts from Secretariat's era and movie props are out for all to see.

"Secretariat memorabilia are some of the most collectible items in the racing industry. We're very excited to be able to share a winning ticket, Meadow Stable silks and a tack box used in grooming," said Wendy Treinen, the museum's director of communications.

Secretariat became a racing legend and won the Derby by 2 1/2 lengths in a world-record time of 1:59 2/5.

Secretariat became so popular, Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated featured the horse on the cover the same week. The William Morris Agency booked his appearances the way it would for a hot movie star. At the time, no movie star was as hot as "Big Red."

"We have the opportunity to connect that to history with some real items and a little bit about the story and root Secretariat in that proper era," Treinen said.

Owner Penny Chenery loaned her personal collection so visitors can get up close and personal.

"Penny has kept her collections very close to her and in pristine shape. We're really proud to display items of such fine quality," Treinen said.

There's also a harness, blinkers and trophy replica that were all featured in the Disney film.

"We really want the race fans to recognize that we celebrate Secretariat's historic wins every day of the year."

The exhibit will stay up well after Derby and is included in the $14 general admission price.
