NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The city on Wednesday opened a new half-mile extension on Korean Veterans Boulevard.

The new road hopes to improve access to the area south of downtown, connecting the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge to Eighth Avenue through SoBro on the south side of the new convention center.

The project cost $41 million and was funded from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.

"The KVB extension, together with the Music City Center, is spurring development in SoBro and will be key in extending the vitality of our downtown district into that area," Mayor Karl Dean said in a news release. "It also expands important transportation connections into downtown from the interstate. This new boulevard knits together Nashville's urban fabric by providing a sense of community between downtown and SoBro."

"This project includes the city's first dual-lane roundabout, which includes innovative road striping and signage to help drivers navigate the circular road," said Public Works Acting Director Randy Lovett in a news release. "Sidewalks and landscaping, and, soon, public art, will make this roundabout an iconic part of the SoBro landscape."

The new convention center is scheduled to open May 19-20.
