Vigilance key to safety at sporting events, experts say

Posted: Updated:

The Boston Marathon explosions are prompting questions about the safety of all sporting events. Experts say vigilance is one way those who attend sporting events can help keep themselves and others safe.

"It goes back to the idea of situational awareness, where you have to be aware of what's going on around you," said John Miller, Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Troy University and an expert in sport venue management and risk management. "Maybe somebody would see someone putting down a knapsack and walking away. That's not necessarily a normal activity, so we have to be more aware of what people are doing."

Miller said the marathon explosions will serve as a teaching tool, which can help event and venue managers provide enhanced security and more preparedness for potential disasters.
