COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

Jeff Ruby's Waterfront restaurant will be reopening in Covington.

In March 2011, the restaurant broke loose from its moorings, causing it to float about 85 yards to the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge with customers and staff inside.

Emergency crews said a rear mooring line held firm, and authorities were able to rig ladders to safely rescue over 80 dinner patrons and others aboard.

The restaurant has since been docked at Covington Landing, which is where the restaurant's permanent home will be.

Covington city officials say the restaurant will be the beginning of the revitalization of the riverfront area.

Ruby and Covington officials inked the deal on Friday morning.

Pat Frew with the Covington Business Council says bringing back the Waterfront to Covington will give the area a much needed economic boost.

"By putting a class-A restaurant in this space, it'll attract the attention of investors and developers looking to put other kinds of retail establishments essentially right outside Cincinnati's front door," said Frew.

The Waterfront restaurant coming back to life is what many Tri-State residents want to hear.

"People need something on this side of the river to bring things back. People love being on the river. It makes them feel like they're on vacation... having a drink... the water," said Alice Mearns of Milford.
