Gonzales Police are on the hunt for thieves they believe are making the short trip from New Orleans to prey on local businesses.

When business comes to a close in Gonzales' industrial park the hustle and bustle of machines disappears. The area falls silent. Gonzales police said early Thursday morning at least two people went on a three hour crime spree at four businesses on Southland Avenue.

Detective Steve Nethken said the suspects broke 20 locks at Southland Storage and helped themselves to anything and everything they could get their hands on.

"There's really no rhyme or reason to what was taken. Some of the items we were able to recover from the storage units were fishing poles, extension cords, camera lenses," Nethken said.

Detectives said they found some of the items taken from the storage units and nearby businesses scattered about the front yard of K J Valve. But, they said, the suspects got away with some of the higher priced items.

"Generators, power tools and they were also missing their company van which had been stored inside the warehouse."

Investigators said they found a truck owned by Baker Distributors backed next to a boat inside the Eugene Higgens warehouse next door. One of the suspects took off with a company owned van and headed east to New Orleans. Detectives used GPS to track it to a lot in Jefferson Parish. Nethken believes investigators are on their trail.

"We have recovered key pieces of forensic evidence which we are submitting to the crime lab which we are comfortable will produce a suspect for us."

Detectives are also in the process of examining surveillance video from nearby businesses.

If you have any information on the burglaries, call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
