NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin right-hander Chase Greening kept the Southeastern Louisiana bats off balance through seven innings Friday as the Lions fell, 4-0, in the opener of a Southland Conference baseball series.
Greening (4-2) and Cory Maltz combined on a seven-hit shutout as Southeastern (25-14, 8-5) fell one game back of SFA (20-17, 9-5) in the conference standings. The Lumberjacks are now in sole possession of first place in the Southland as both Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dropped the first game of their respective series. T
he Lumberjacks scored single runs in the third and fifth innings and scored a pair in the seventh as they chased Lion starter Andro Èutura.
Working around a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the third, Èutura allowed just the single run. In the fifth, a pair of two-out singles plated Freddy Villalobos with the game's second run.
Hunter Dozier, the Southland's leading hitter, led off the seventh with a solo home run just inside the left-field foul pole. It was his 11th of the season. Villalobos followed with a double and the Lions elected to bring in Dylan Hills. Villalobos later scored on a sacrifice fly to left.
Greening earned the win while Èutura (0-2) suffered the loss. Sam Roberson led Southeastern at the plate with a 2-for-3 night, including a lead-off double in the fourth.
Saturday, Lion freshman right-hander Tate Scioneaux (4-0, 3.22) draws junior right-hander Kyle Cross (4-3, 3.02) as the series continues at 2 p.m.
The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet through the Southeastern athletics website, as well as on the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio apps.
