Fire fighters team with lifeguards in water rescue training

The Jerusalem Township fire department wants to be ready when the swimming season starts.

The dive team conducted a joint training session today at the Oregon YMCA with lifeguards from Maumee Bay State Park.

The bay is, of course, much more murky than a swimming pool, but this gets the fire fighters in the water and allows them to learn the techniques the lifeguards use in a rescue.

"Safety is the most paramount feature we have here. Our divers are the first and foremost importance to us, so having one system and then a backup system and pre-planning and operations is critical," said Fire Chief Tony Parasiliti.

"The training will likely be put to use as it gets warmer outside," he added.

Just last week the fire department rescued three people from a capsized boat.
