BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The departing chairman of Alabama's Democratic Party is starting a new organization in hopes of revitalizing the two-party system in the state.

Mark Kennedy is organizing a new group called the Alabama Democratic Majority as he steps down as head of the state party.

Kennedy has scheduled a news conference for Monday in Birmingham to discuss the new organization. He says it's a non-profit that will work on voter education, registration and participation.

The former Supreme Court justice is leaving the party chairmanship after a split with its longtime vice chairman, Joe Reed.

Kennedy has been chairman since 2011. He's the husband of Peggy Wallace Kennedy, the daughter of former four-term Gov. George Wallace.

Once the state's dominant political party, Democrats currently don't hold any statewide offices in Alabama.
