Man killed in Columbia lawn mower accident

David Haynes David Haynes
COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

A longtime Maury County employee died Monday when a lawn mower apparently rolled on top of him.

David Haynes, a 10-year employee of the county maintenance department, was killed in the accident near the Maury County Industrial Park on Oakland Parkway at Rutherford Lane.

His bosses said Haynes had mowed in the area before, but this time something went horribly wrong.

Maury County Mayor Jim Bailey said Haynes was a good employee who knew his job well.

"I'm sure he enjoyed what he was doing," Bailey said. "We have to go back and stress safety more. Many of us who operate mowers have had accidents but have walked way from them."

State workplace safety investigators were called to the scene, and a report on the fatal accident should be released in about 6 weeks.
