Baton Rouge suing BP for $35 million in losses

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A civil suit from the city of Baton Rouge was filed late Friday seeking more than $35 million in compensation for losses caused by the April 20, 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

The city wants the $35 million in lost taxes and other expenses the city says oil giant BP and several contractors are responsible for.

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig killed 11 men who were on the mobile offshore rig. It also spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

City officials hired attorneys from New Orleans and Florida. The city is also seeking punitive damages against the defendants.
