CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

First Lady Michelle Obama presented the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County with the prestigious 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

This award is the nation's highest honor recognizing museums and libraries for their service to the community. Only ten libraries received the recognition. A ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon at the White House.

The National Medal specifically recognizes the library for its innovative approaches to public service and efforts in the community.

Following the ceremony, the Cincinnati Library (@CincyLibrary) tweeted: "The 2013 #NationalMedal for Museum and Library Service belongs to the entire Cincinnati and Hamilton County community. Congratulations!"

Library officials say in 2012, a total of 17,335,953 items were loaned, including 10,463,887 books.

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County offers 21,000 programs, workshops and classes.
