NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A renter escaped from an overnight fire in northern Davidson County but suffered serious burns.

The fire occurred around midnight at a home on Eatons Creek Road.

The victim was home alone when he smelled smoke coming from the kitchen and discovered his stove was on fire.

He tried to put it out himself, but the flames kept getting bigger.

Crews arrived within minutes but there wasn't much they could do to save the home.

The renter sustained first-, second- and third-degree burns on his arms and is hospitalized at Vanderbilt's Burn Center Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire is still unclear but may be electrical since a neighbor said one of the lights over the stove was sparking earlier.
