Ohio's new concussion law addresses youth sports

(FOX19) -

Ohio's new Return-to-Play law went into effect on Friday, with the goal of protecting athletes in school and youth sports.

The law will require changes for parents, coaches and referees.

Some of the new requirements include:

  • Parents are required to return a signed form provided by the school stating they've received a concussion information sheet from the Ohio Department of Health.
  • Coaches and referees may not serve until they have completed an online training program, which is required every three years.
  • Officials must remove athletes from participation if they show signs of a concussion.
  • Clearing an athlete to return to play must be done by a physician or other designated healthcare provider.

Experts say an estimated 1.6 million to 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions happen in the United States each year.
