Teen skips school, caught by police dog after break-in

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Metro high school student is in trouble after police said he skipped class to allegedly break into an elderly woman's home.

The Overton High School student told detectives he walked away from school after third period Thursday and went to rob a home on Watsonwood Drive in south Nashville.

Police said the elderly resident left home for only a few moments, and when she returned home she saw the teen inside. She screamed, and the teen ran from the scene with a computer and some jewelry.

A neighbor was watching as the teenager ran off, so she followed the fleeing suspect to the 500 block of Brewer Drive.

Canine Officer Robert Collins and a police dog named Aengus found the teen under a storage shed. Police said a laptop computer and change taken from the victim's home were found in nearby bushes.

The teen was treated at a hospital for a few dog bites from his apprehension and then taken into custody.

"What I would say to him is it's very dangerous. You're sixteen years old. His life could've been taken had he walked into the wrong house with a gun owner," said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous.

The 16-year-old was booked at juvenile detention on charges of aggravated burglary, felony theft and resisting arrest.

The burglary victim said she will begin setting her house alarm system whenever she leaves home, even if it's just for a few moments.
