KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas fire department is pulling together for a fellow firefighter whose wife is nearing the end of her battle with cancer.

Jason Baxter joined the Kilgore Fire Department over two years ago, on the job only a few months when his wife, Kim, was diagnosed with cancer.

"His wife got diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago when he first got hired on to the department. We didn't realize that we had such little time, we set the drawing for May 31st for the gun raffle and we're hoping that she makes it that far," says Kilgore firefighter Josh McDowell.

Firefighters know that Kim is losing her battle with cancer. She may have only days to live.

"Jason said maybe she's got two or three days, but she's still fighting she's got a 3-year-old girl. She's 34 years old. This is a pain no man should have to endure. We're going to do what we can, we're going to be with them throughout the whole process," McDowell says.

Fellow firefighters are now helping Jason to prepare to pay for funeral arrangements.

"Being a firefighter is more than just helping the community, we're a brotherhood. I can't wrap my mind around it I been married 21 years with two teenage daughters and I couldn't imagine if I was in his shoes , gong through thinking," says fellow firefighter Billy Cunningham.

Firefighters have covered Jason's shifts on their own time, to make sure he gets a paycheck, while he spends all of his time at Kim's side.

"I've got a 3-year-old girl myself. What if that was my wife , what if it was your wife," says McDowell.

If you'd like to help, you can make donations to the Kilgore Professional Firefighters Association Local 2996. Firefighters will hold a Baxter family benefit next Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kilgore Walmart.
