Brush fires keep firefighters busy across Western Mass

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Sunny and dry conditions made it good to venture outside this weekend, but as local firefighters found out Sunday afternoon, it was also perfect weather for brush fires.

Several small ones popped up throughout the day, but there were three big brush fires that CBS 3 received alerts on - those being Belchertown, Monson and Holyoke.

Belchertown and Monson dealt with 2 acres and 4 acres burning, respectively.

In Holyoke, it was a whole different story.

The fire department got the call about 11:45 a.m. Sunday for a brush fire just off the Interstate 91 rest area on the southbound side.

While the fire was under control by 6 p.m., Lt. Thomas Paquin, of the Holyoke Fire Department, estimated that 15 acres burned.

Fire departments from Whately, Southampton and several other communities pitched in, as tanker trucks were needed to provide water to fight the blaze.

Both Paquin and Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant, passed along some brush fire safety tips.

They said that when it is dry, residents are better off not having open flames outside.  But if you do, be very careful.

Good housekeeping will keep brush fires from happening, as you should clean up leaves that are around the house and keep them away from outdoor grills.

Both men also stressed that people should not carelessly dispose of cigarettes.
