HARLEM, GA (WFXG) -

UPDATE: Neighbors are in still in shock that a decaying body was found at a nearby home on their street. Sunday afternoon, Columbia County deputies found the body of 74 year old Catherine Simmons in her daughter's home on Mahala Lane in Harlem.

"That's the sad part is why do people do the things they do," said Sativa Sturkey, neighobor.

What investigators said Denise Chinnery did was pretty disturbing.  They came to her Harlem home, and she wouldn't let them in.  Officers forced open the door and found her mother, 74 year  old Catherine Simmons body, sitting up in a chair, long dead.

"From what we were told she was inside the house in the living room," said Sturkey.

Neighbors never even knew Simmons was there.

"We've never actually seen her," said Sturkey. "We've seen the daughter, she's come in and out t but we've never actually seen her [Simmons]."

Despite the tragedy that comes as a bit of a shock to the community, they are trying their best to make some sense of it all.

"We just don't want anyone passing judgment on her because nobody knows what actually happened or why she did what she did," said Sturkey.  "We'll pray for her, that's all we'll do."
