PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A jury has found Jodi Arias guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her ex-lover Travis Alexander.

They made the announcement just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Jodi Arias could face the death penalty in the death of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander. The penalty phase of the trial begins on Thursday afternoon.

It all started in September of 2006 when Alexander, 30, met a new coworker at a PrePaid Legal conference in Las Vegas.

Arias, 28, and Alexander had a rocky relationship that ended after a few months but their sexual relationship continued.

On June 4, 2008, police said Arias shot Alexander in the head, stabbed him 27 times and slit his throat from ear to ear.

Detectives said she tried to clean up the crime scene, deleted photos she had taken during the killing and put the camera in a washing machine before taking off.

Arias said she remembers shooting Alexander but said she then blacked out.

The courtroom was stunned when Arias took the stand. She spent 18 days testifying, telling jurors she killed her ex-boyfriend in self-defense.

Arias said Alexander was physically abusive. She talked about her triple-X sex life and their Mormon faith.

Arizona jurors get to question witnesses, one of just six states that allow it.

The judge read Arias their questions.

"Why is it that you have no memory of stabbing Travis?" the judge read.

"I can't really explain why my mind did what it did. Maybe because it's too horrible, I don't know," Arias responded.

Of the 18 original jurors, 15 remain.

Juror No. 5 was dismissed, then came back again to watch as a spectator, making a spectacle of herself and speaking only to CBS 5 News the day she came back to court.

"I'm looking forward to giving my interview and say my mind of the story and go out there and say what really happened," said Juror No. 5, whose identity we chose not to release.

Juror No. 11 was excused because of an illness and No. 8 was booted the day the prosecution rested its case. The men and women who remain will decide the admitted killer's fate.

Arias is eligible for the death penalty.
