Beware of Derby ticket scams

Reanna Smith-Hamblin Reanna Smith-Hamblin

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – If you are still thinking about heading to the track for Oaks and Derby this weekend, there are still tickets available through Churchill Downs and you'll find plenty if you start searching online.

But you want to make sure they are legit.

"You've really got to be cautious when you are looking online at Craig's List or any kind of online Auction sites," said Reanna Smith-Hamblin, BBB Communications Director.

On Craigslist tickets ranged from $100 to more than $1,000, but mixed in with the good can also be the scams. The cons aren't new, but according to BBB, people will still fall victim, especially if you are looking and you live out of town.

"There are a lot of different things to look out for, of course, grammatical errors, spelling errors, just to good to be true prices is another one," said Smith-Hamblin.

Experts urge, a big red flag is when the seller is having you wire transfer money. "Another way these days are the green dot money packs," said Smith-Hamblin.  "They will ask you to put the money on a green dot money pack and pay for it that way instead and then you are out the money and don't have tickets either."

One of the most common scams, paying for tickets that aren't exactly the seats you were expecting. "So you've really got to be cautious and use common sense and do your homework," said Smith-Hamblin. "Make sure you are buying what you think you are buying."

The best way to avoid getting scammed is to deal in person. "You know if you are going to purchase them on Craigslist," said Smith-Hamblin. "Try to figure out if they are local, so you can meet with them personally."

You can still purchase general admission tickets online or at the track.

Oaks General admission:
$25, if you purchase before midnight on Thursday.
$30, if you purchase Oaks Day.

Derby General admission:
$40, if you purchase before midnight on Friday.
$50, if you purchase Derby Day.

Section 110 seats at first turn on Oaks Day:
$299 for covered seat.
$249 for open seat.

Section 110 seats at first turn on Derby Day:
$550 for covered seat.
$499 for open seat.

Section 110, 2 day event tickets = $698

The ticket price for section 110 includes full food and beverage.
