BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A former executive director of the Alabama Democratic Party is the new leader of Conservation Alabama and the Conservation Alabama Foundation.

Jim Spearman takes over as director Wednesday from Adam Snyder, who's becoming senior campaign adviser for the Nature Conservancy.

Conservation Alabama board chair Zac McCrary said Spearman brings political acumen, fundraising ability, and a passion for Alabama to his new job. Spearman said his roots are in Democratic politics, but the only way to protect the people and places of Alabama is to work with all interests.

Before getting into political work, Spearman's background was in business, including owning Piggy Wiggly grocery stores in and around his home county of Lamar County and being chairman of the board for Citizens State Bank.
