AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

PGA pro golfer Jason Dufner and his wife Amanda are tackling hunger among school children in Lee County.

The couple, who live in Auburn, visited Carver on Tuesday, one of two schools they are helping in this area.

The pro golfer teamed up with Auburn University to send bags of food home every Friday to 275 children in Lee County.

AU students get the Ziploc bags ready, then teachers discreetly put them in the children's back packs on Friday at recess so they can have meals that would otherwise be scarce for them on the weekends.

"What touched me was hearing from the kids and the impact this was having on them and we did not have it in this area so we decided to bring it to this community," said the Dufners.

Nearly 20 million children in the United States face hunger every year.

For $80 you can help provide weekend meals for a child for an entire school year. For more information please visit the official website

Blessings in a Backpack provides food for children who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
