IRONDALE, AL (WBRC) -

When Martha Fountain Scruggs was born, Henry Ford hadn't yet invented the Model ‘T', World War I was still 10 years away and the Empire State Building was 27 years from becoming Manhattan's tallest building.

Today, she celebrated her 109th birthday at St. Martins in the Pines, the nursing facility where she has lived for more than 20 years. Family and friends gathered to give her a big cake and some ice cream.

Ms. Scruggs was an elementary school teacher for over 40 years at Gibson Grammar School in Woodlawn. She was surprised to find out that she's believed to be the oldest living person in Alabama.

"I can't believe it, my gracious," she said.

When asked how she lived so long, she credits growing up on a farm and eating fresh food.
