Cincinnati mall looking to re-invent itself

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

After $25 million in improvements at the Northgate Mall in Colerain Township, a new retailer opened its doors on Thursday.

Marshalls opened a new store there on Thursday.

Officials hope that this will mark the beginning of an economic renaissance for the mall and our area.

Other stores are coming, reversing a decline which began when Dillards and J.C. Penny left.

Frank Birkenhauer works for Clermont County, he says that once those two moved out, the mall started a downtown. The township had to remarket the space.

Residents like George Hailstack are excited, "It's great. It's definitely picking up the area. Soon as they get Cheddar's over there done its going to be a nice shopping area to come back to."

Marshalls opened on Thursday but Birkenhauer says a Burlington Coat Factory opened a few weeks back and an Ulta is scheduled to open next week.

More still could be coming, "we still have DSW shoes, Michael's and coming soon there's the possibility of another big box retailer," Birkenhauer said.

At least $25 million has gone into improvements at Northgate Mall. Those improvements include a memorial to veterans, police and firefighters. It will be unveiled Friday, May 24th.
