Country music fans make Opry pilgrimage to honor George Jones

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Hundreds of country music fans began lining up the night before Thursday's public memorial to legendary artist George Jones at the Opry House in Nashville, and the line snaked about a mile once the doors opened.

It is easy to note the many stars who were in attendance, but in true George Jones fashion, the stories of his devoted fans - including the many who couldn't get inside and stood outside listening to audio of the service - reveal his lasting legacy.

Englishman Eric Powell diverted his vacation from Florida to visit Music City to pay his respects to his favorite singer.

"In 40-odd years, I've been to many shows. He was in Ireland years ago and did six shows, so I went to six shows with him over there," Powell said.

The service closed with Alan Jackson stirring rendition of Jones' hit He Stopped Loving Her Today, which struck a special chord with at least one Jones fan.

"The moment of this funeral was Alan Jackson when he sang his song. I've always loved that song, and I'll never forget Alan Jackson for that," said John Bradford, of Floyd County, KY.

Bradford said he has attended 62 of Jones' shows and thought it was important to be present for the service Thursday.
