2 face charges for harboring 17-year-old murder suspect

The 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Pearl-Cohn student last month appeared in juvenile court Friday, and police also announced charges against two people accused of harboring the suspect.

Eric Goodner was in violation of his probation at the time he allegedly shot and killed Johnathan Johnson the morning of April 11 as Johnson waited for his school bus in north Nashville, according to a Department of Children's Services case worker.

Assistant District Attorney Stacy Miller said Goodner had been found guilty of a crime in December 2012 and was then placed in DCS custody.

Goodner spent some time at the Woodland Hills Youth Development Center and was later released to serve probation.

There were rules, however, as Goodner was supposed to be staying with his mother. The case worker also testified in court Friday that Goodner was supposed to check in with her and follow other guidelines.

Goodner promised to follow the rules, but he didn't, as the case worker found him in violation before Goodner allegedly killed Johnson.

The juvenile court magistrate said, given the violation, there was enough probable cause Friday to keep Goodner in custody.

Woman arrested, warrant issued for suspect's cousin

A woman was arrested Friday and another person is being sought after the arrest of a 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Pearl-Cohn student.

Detectives arrested Quantrese Leyta Upkins for harboring 17-year-old Eric Goodner. Upkins is formally charged in a warrant issued this morning with being an accessory after the fact.

Upkins, 31, is the leaseholder of the apartment in the Village Place complex where Goodner was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon. She is the girlfriend of Nicholas Antonio Goodner, Eric Goodner's cousin, who also lives at the apartment.

The investigation reveals that Eric Goodner had been staying at the apartment since at least April 27. Quantrese Upkins told detectives that Nicholas Goodner asked if Eric Goodner could stay with them.

An arrest warrant was also issued Friday morning against Nicholas Goodner charging him with being an accessory after the fact.

Officers and detectives are now working to bring him into custody.

"It is the police department's view that these two persons contributed to fear and concern in the community by allegedly assisting Eric Goodner avoid capture," Chief Steve Anderson said in a news release. "At a time when police officers and citizens throughout Nashville were on the lookout for Goodner, it appears these two persons were helping him despite intense publicity about his fugitive status. We believe they, too, should be held accountable."
